Today we pause to recognize the contributions of an American icon who championed the cause of civil rights in the 1950’s and 60’s. .
He once stated, “The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy.”

Today we honor a man who knew what it meant to not only choose the challenge but to rise to it.

It was a year that gave us pause to truly apprecia

We can’t wait to get started with 2021 so we can continue the important work of honoring our Nation’s heroes. Today, on the 79th anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor, we pause to honor the bravery, the sacrifice, and the determination to defend this incredible country of ours.

We lost a hero this weekend. WWII 13th Army Air Fo

We lost a hero this weekend. WWII 13th Army Air Force Staff Sargent Russell “Bill” Rucker, who flew with us on our April 2017 Honor Flight, passed away this weekend.

Russell Frances (Bill) Rucker, age 99 of Van Lear, Ky, passed away Sunday, November 22, 2020. He was born in 1921 in Hitchens, Ky and worked as a coal miner until he enlisted in the Army. Bill was a WWII Veteran that served as Staff Sergeant with the Army-Air Corp in the South Pacific. After his military service he returned to Johnson County and trained as an instructor at Mayo Vocational School, initially teaching refrigeration and sheet metal and later teaching mathematics. He retired from Mayo Vocational School but never retired from his daily chores and interests. Bill loved his flowers and took great pride in his community. Bill was a cherished member of the Van Lear Church of Christ for over 70 years and a founding member of the Van Lear Historical Society. Bill loved his family, church family, and community.

In November 1919, President Wilson proclaimed November 11 as the first commemoration of Armistice Day with the following words:

“To us in America, the reflections of Armistice Day will be filled with solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the country’s service and with gratitude for the victory, both because of the thing from which it has freed us and because of the opportunity it has given America to show her sympathy with peace and justice in the councils of the nations…"

Today, just like any other day, we at Honor Flight Kentucky offer our sincere gratitude and respect for all those who have worn the uniform of our great Nation. Your service and sacrifice do not go unnoticed.
