The tradition of the Gold Star began during World

The tradition of the Gold Star began during World War II. During the early days of the war, a blue star was used on service flags and hung in homes and businesses to represent each living active-duty member. As men were killed in combat, the gold star was superimposed on the blue star to honor the person for his ultimate sacrifice to the country. Eventually, the mothers of those fallen service members became known as Gold Star Mothers, and their families Gold Star Families.

Today we honor those mothers and families on Gold Star Mother’s Day. Thank you for raising a hero. Your loss will never be forgotten.

These heroes couldn’t make it to D.C. without the hard work of many volunteers. Our Call Team is responsible for reaching out to all of our veterans and guardians assigned to flights. They ensure everyone has the information that’s needed for a successful mission. These Call Team members are an invaluable part of the HFK Family. Know that we are incredibly grateful for the time and energy you dedicate to honoring our Nation’s heroes.

Senior Airman Kimberly Fultz is our #WednesdaysWom

Senior Airman Kimberly Fultz is our #WednesdaysWoman this week. Fultz served until 2005, enlisting just months after the 9/11 attacks. She served as an Operations Manager in the 99th Engineering Squadron and was selected from a Civil Engineering Unit in Al Jabar, Kuwait during the first five days of Operation Iraqi Freedom to be a part of a joint task force with the British Royal Engineers. Together, they built the first base in Iraq that is now known as Camp Tallil.

In her second deployment, she joined another task force with the U.S. Army to learn convoy security around Abu Ghraib Prison. They improved prisoners living conditions and fortified the base for U.S. troops. It was there, that she fell in love with a U.S. Marine who is now her husband of almost 15 years.

We are grateful for your incredible service Ms. Fultz!

Are you ready to help us show some love to our vet

Are you ready to help us show some love to our veterans? On every Honor Flight, we include a Mail Call where the veterans receive letters and cards from family and friends who love and appreciate them as well as community members who want to express their gratitude for the service and sacrifice displayed by our heroes.

Veterans were manifested to our spring 2020 flight only to find out it would be delayed due to Covid-19. We hope to take off again in spring 2021, however we’re thinking we’d like to show some extra love to these extra patient heroes of ours for Veterans Day and we could really use YOUR help!!

Create, write, and gather up cards and letters of gratitude for these veterans from all conflicts and branches of service (it’s always best to just address mail to “Hero”) and mail them to us at Honor Flight Kentucky, P.O. Box 1, Winchester, KY 40392.

Teachers, we’d love to receive mail from your students! If you need to make arrangements other than mailing to our PO Box, just send us a message and we’ll try to work something out. ALL MAIL MUST BE RECEIVED BY OCT. 31st so that we can sort and distribute your mail to our veterans for Veterans Day!!

If you know a veteran that was manifested for our May 2020 flight (received the phone call from HFK confirming this), feel free to send mail clearly labeled for them and we’ll be sure to include it their Mail Call bundle.

Master Sergeant Jayme Sanders served in the U.S. A

Master Sergeant Jayme Sanders served in the U.S. Army, and later the Army Reserves over a span of thirty years. She arrived in Heidelberg, Germany in 1975 as a wide-eyed 20-year-old and spent three years stationed in Germany where she met her husband. They were able to travel throughout Europe and enjoyed living in the close knit military community abroad. She returned to the States to assignments at Ft. Eustis and Ft. McPherson and earned the Overseas Service Ribbon, Meritorious Service Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, and Reserve Medal among others. We are grateful for your service Ms. Sanders!

Today we honor the 2,977 civilian lives lost this morning, 19 years ago, including the 412 first responders who lost their lives that day, in addition to the countless others who lost their battles with illnesses related to the bravery they exemplified following the attacks.

We also honor the hundreds of thousands of troops who have served in the War on Terror. Each individual, a hero, that America celebrates. We are grateful for your sacrifice, your courage, and your calling to protect the freedom that is the foundation of this great Nation.
